Once I saw the definitions beside clinical examples, the differences became obvious.
Very helpful for exams but also slightly humbling clinically.
It actually improved the way I take history.
Instead of asking vague questions like “any unusual thoughts?”, I became more specific because I understood what experiences I was trying to identify.
That was a nice unexpected benefit.
I first used it during IMM preparation, then came back to it for Part II.
The psychopathology itself doesn't change depending on the exam, so once you understand it properly you carry that knowledge forward.
That makes it a very useful long-term psychiatry resource.
My only suggestion would be to add even more short clinical vignettes after every difficult group of terms.
Psychopathology becomes easiest when you are forced to identify the symptom from what the patient says.
Otherwise very satisfied.
I would personally like even more comparison tables for terms which are commonly confused, especially thought disorder and abnormalities of perception.
But the explanations and examples are already very helpful.
Definitely easier to revise than the original Fish when exam is near.
Some psychopathology words sound much more complicated than the actual idea.
When they are explained with an example, you suddenly realise the concept is not difficult at all.
Made my psychiatry rotation much easier.
Honestly it helped a lot because our textbook mentioned many terms very briefly.
I finally understood things like thought insertion and delusions properly instead of just memorising definitions for the viva.
A lot of psychopathology terminology was taught to us once and then we were expected to somehow remember it forever.
This was a very useful refresher.
When you're studying for exams it can become a list of definitions.
But when the examples are written around what a patient might actually say, you remember why the terminology exists in the first place.
People sometimes write “thought disorder present” in notes without describing what they actually observed.
Fish Made Easy helped me understand the difference between the individual abnormalities much better.
When I see an interesting symptom on the ward, I sometimes go back and revise the proper psychopathology term.
It made me much more careful about how I describe patients in case presentations.
English is not my first language and sometimes the original descriptions in psychopathology books are difficult, even when you understand psychiatry well.
This version made many terms easier without changing their clinical meaning.
That was important for me.
If I got a phenomenology question wrong, I would come back and revise that concept from Fish Made Easy.
Doing that repeatedly was much more effective than rereading the whole psychopathology chapter every time.
Passivity, thought insertion, withdrawal, broadcasting, depersonalisation and derealisation were topics I knew theoretically but still mixed in questions.
The examples made them much clearer.
The explanations are concise enough for revision but still give enough context to understand what the symptom means clinically.
Very helpful for someone who finds traditional psychopathology texts a bit dense.
For MRCPsych I wouldn't rely on memorising definitions alone because the vignettes are often written in a way where two terms appear plausible.
This helped me understand the distinguishing feature rather than just recognising the word.
The College often tests phenomenology through quite subtle clinical descriptions, so knowing the terminology accurately matters.
I found the sections on thought disorder and passivity phenomena particularly useful.
Much easier to revise than going back through several different textbooks.
Hallucination types, illusion, pareidolia, extracampine hallucination and related concepts used to be a headache.
After enough revision they finally became manageable.
Very useful before IMM.
Before this, I would learn something today and confuse it again next week.
The examples helped make the concepts stick.
Good resource for IMM preparation.
It takes a subject which is usually taught in a very dry way and makes it much easier to actually understand.
The biggest benefit is that once you understand these concepts, they help everywhere, MCPS, IMM, FCPS, MRCPsych, TOACS and even routine patient assessment.
